Educating For Character : Developing Moral Character

This course is designed for K-12 educators who wish to enhance the effectiveness of teaching character in their classroom. Whether or not your district currently has a formalized character education program or not, you will benefit from the ideas in this course. The major ethical components discussed in this course are based on the universal Character Counts!core pillars of Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship.
Participants will obtain many concrete ideas for immediate use with students to help their moral character development and their bottom line learning.

Bringing Out the Best in Students: Developing Performance Character

In this course, K-12 educators will learn how to help students understand, value, and internalize such performance character traits such as perseverance, a strong work ethic, self-discipline, resiliency, and humility. Educators will gain concrete ideas they can use to help develop performance character by creating a culture of excellence, effectively using the “4 Keys Approach” to develop character, building ethical learning communities within the classroom, and using service learning to bring out the best in students. Participants will
be exposed to valuable major character education resources such as books, newsletters and websites.

Summer 2011 Character Education Workshops at Kent State: Two 1 credit courses in character education will be offered at Kent State this summer:
“Ethical Fitness” will be offered 8:30 – 4:00 on June 27 and 28, and can be taken for either one undergraduate or graduate credit hour. The course, taught by David Spencer, adjunct professor at Kent State and former principal and director of character education at Kent City Schools, focuses on resolving ethical dilemmas evident in all areas of learning. Participants will also identify dilemmas faced by students, parents, teachers and business professionals. “Character Education,” also taught by Mr. Spencer, will explore the foundational role of character education in curriculum and instruction, include the study of effective practices and available resources, and demonstrate how character development can be integrated into regular lesson plans, from kindergarten through 12th grade. University of Dayton
Three Character Education day-long workshops will be offered this summer:
“Developing and Improving Attitudes and Character: A Vital Key to Student Success” (June 14),
“Developing and Implementing a Character Education Program for a Public School System:  Successes and Challenges” (June 17) and
“Character Education: Best Practices” (June 21).
Mr. Jim Place, former director of Character Education at Hamilton City Schools and currently Adjunct Professor at the University of Dayton, will be the primary presenter at each workshop. 1-3 pass-fail graduate credits available for each workshop.
