A three hour graduate level WebCT course offered
by Ashland University at the Massillon/Stark
Center in Massillon, Ohio. Participants will
learn how to model, affirm and teach good
character. As a WebCT Course, participants will
meet at the Stark Center for four sessions.

Educating for Character
This course is designed for K-12 educators who
wish to enhance the effectiveness of teaching
character in their classroom. Whether or
not your district currently has a formalized
character education program or not, you will
benefit from the ideas in this course. The major
components discussed in this course are based on
the Character Counts! core pillars of
Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility,
Fairness, Caring and Citizenship.
Participants will obtain many concrete ideas for
immediate use with students to help their
character development and their bottom line
learning.

Character Education -
In this workshop, participants will explore the
foundational role of character education in
curriculum and instruction. Find out how
teachers can more effectively meet this urgent
need with greater awareness of specific
practices and available resources. Learn how to
thread character development strategies into
regular lesson plans, from kindergarten to 12th
grade. Each participant receives a binder with
over three hundred activities. Discussions,
activities and presentations are the focus of
each day.
Ethical Fitness -
This workshop is designed for broad
participation through discussions, brainstorming
and problem-solving. The focus is on resolving
ethical dilemmas evident in all areas of
learning. Participants will also identify
dilemmas faces by students, parents, teachers
and business professionals. Participants will
learn specific strategies which address those
times when virtues come into conflict. Prior to
the workshop, participants should read, How
People Make Tough Choices, by Rushworth
Kidder, ISBN 0684818388. By the end of the
workshop you will prepare a one to two page
response to the book, as well as a one page
dilemma to share with the class. Ethical

COURSE DESCRIPTION: ECW 530- "Developing
and Improving Attitudes and Character: A Vital
Key to Student Success" This course is
designed for teachers, administrators,
counselors, and coaches, and will stress the
implementation of "The Goal Card
System," a proven method for improving the
attitude and character of the students.
This hands-on workshop will provide the
opportunity to develop a unique personal plan
for nurturing, enhancing, developing, and
improving attitude and character.
INSTRUCTIONAL
LEADERSHIP: Mr. Jim Place will provide the major
instructional leadership for this workshop.
Teaching strategies will utilize group
activities and individual reflection.
Participants will be asked to re-examine and
reconnect with their basic philosophies as an
educator. While Jim's association with athletic
teams as a coach is the vehicle he uses to
deliver his presentation, he will relate many
examples of successful strategies that can be
incorporated into any educator's philosophy.
