Ohio
Partners in Character Education is a network of schools, community
organizations, and educators working to improve and advance character
education in Ohio.
What does OPCE do? We:

Sponsor
an annual statewide conference featuring national speakers, a rich
array of workshops on teaching and resource issues, and vendor
displays

Offer
full-day professional development workshops led by recognized experts

Maintain the
OPCE web site
featuring: listing of teaching materials and lesson plans indexed by
grade and by character development objective; descriptions of more
than 50 character education programs in Ohio with contact information
-
Maintain
the OPCE listserv to facilitate networking and the sharing of
information among character educators
-

the Ohio Statewide
Laws
of Life
Essay
Contest

Serve
as a clearinghouse for information about character education for Ohio

Publish
a
quarterly
on-line newsletter with tips, information about upcoming
events, and funding suggestions.

Since 1999, OPCE has:

Served
more than 300 schools with over 250,000 students
-
Designed
and delivered more than 100 hours of professional education to 800
Ohio teachers, counselors, administrators and community members in
workshops featuring expert presenters and opportunities to discuss
effective teaching strategies

Enabled
several hundred educators to participate in national training
institutes on character education. (This direct training of local
partner teams resulted in over 500 hours of additional in-service
training. The teams led workshops and made presentations to thousands
of educators in their own districts.)

Created
a listserv used by over 300 key contact educators for sharing information
and resources

Created
this website that describes the local projects, links to other
character education websites, and serves as a clearinghouse of
information about character education for Ohio

Sponsored
a yearly statewide conference - "The Governor's Summit on Character Education"
- featuring keynote
addresses by national leaders in character education, presentations by
Ohio experts, resource displays, and information exchanges among
educators and community leaders

Funded
independent evaluations of the state-funded and federally funded local
projects that assess the impact and effectiveness of the local
programs.
