Ohio Partners in Character Education is a network of schools, community organizations, and educators working to improve and advance character education in Ohio.

What does OPCE do?  We:

  • Sponsor an annual statewide conference featuring national speakers, a rich array of workshops on teaching and resource issues, and vendor displays

  • Offer full-day professional development workshops led by recognized experts

  • Maintain the OPCE web site featuring: listing of teaching materials and lesson plans indexed by grade and by character development objective; descriptions of more than 50 character education programs in Ohio with contact information

  • Maintain the OPCE listserv to facilitate networking and the sharing of information among character educators

  • Sponsor the Ohio Statewide Laws of Life Essay Contest

  • Serve as a clearinghouse for information about character education for Ohio

  • Publish a quarterly on-line newsletter with tips, information about upcoming events, and funding suggestions.

Since 1999, OPCE has:

  • Served more than 300 schools with over 250,000 students

  • Designed and delivered more than 100 hours of professional education to 800 Ohio teachers, counselors, administrators and community members in workshops featuring expert presenters and opportunities to discuss effective teaching strategies

  • Enabled several hundred educators to participate in national training institutes on character education. (This direct training of local partner teams resulted in over 500 hours of additional in-service training. The teams led workshops and made presentations to thousands of educators in their own districts.)

  • Created a listserv used by over 300 key contact educators for sharing information and resources

  • Created this website that describes the local projects, links to other character education websites, and serves as a clearinghouse of information about character education for Ohio

  • Sponsored a yearly statewide conference  - "The Governor's Summit on Character Education" - featuring keynote addresses by national leaders in character education, presentations by Ohio experts, resource displays, and information exchanges among educators and community leaders

  • Funded independent evaluations of the state-funded and federally funded local projects that assess the impact and effectiveness of the local programs.

  • Sponsored the Ohio Statewide Laws of Life Essay Contest
